First model of the French market to comply with future Euro-6 in 2014, the Passat BlueTDI still lowers its consumption and emissions using a very simple technique: an SCR catalyst coupled with an additive AdBlue. The principle of AdBlue is injected continuously into the exhaust upstream of the catalyst. Contact with heat, it turns into ammonia, an ammonia once the catalyst converts the nitrogen oxide (the famous NOx) into nitrogen and water. Its action results in a significant reduction of NOx in the exhaust gas therefore significantly reduced pollution. Note that AdBlue is harmless, odorless and biodegradable.

Finally as regards maintenance, AdBlue is stored in a tank of 17 L instead of the spare wheel and provides a range of 30 000 km. Filling the tank is in the classic revisions.

Available on the Passat 2.0 TDI CR 140 PS confortline finish, the system allows BlueTDI a power gain of 3 hp (143 total), a decrease in consumption of 0.4 L (5.2 L/100 km in total combined cycle) and CO2 emissions of 137 g / km less than 9 g / km.
