In collaboration with Boston-Power and Electroengine companies specializing in the production of lithium ion batteries and electric motors, Saab will produce in the first quarter of 2011 a fleet of 9-3 with zero emissions with the aim of gaining experience with a view a possible large-scale production. Ake Jonsson, managing director of Saab Automobile AB, however, ruled that “the development process will take time and patience” in addition to the additional difficulties posed by the “progress of infrastructure and the actual response of the public.”
The short-term future of the Swedish brand will be marked by the 9-4X (April 2011), the 9-5 Wagon (July 2011) and the next 9-3 (2012) anticipated a redesign for the current generation introduced during autumn. The D-segment car will have an aesthetic closer to 9-5, with new bumpers front and details, plus the 2.0 turbo direct injection engines (power range between 160 and 220 hp) and 2.0 diesel 130, 160 and 180 hp.
