The Volkswagen Golf R made its debut among the snows of Ellmau, Austria, locus suitable for assessing the effectiveness of the new four wheel drive system 4MOTION with Haldex viscous coupling. In comparison with the R32, designers have improved the power transmission between the two axles, not to be needed is a difference in rotational speed between them to send torque to all four wheels. The new generation of 4Motion also works without being affected by any slippage because the pressure is always available. During acceleration or recovery, is more effective to prevent the wheels from the front, given the possibility in extreme cases to send all the torque to the rear wheels.
Compared to the previous R32, the new Golf limited R 21% fuel consumption, reaching a value of 8.4 liters per hundred kilometers; CO2 emissions amounted to 195 grams per kilometer. This major improvement is made possible by the now classic combination between TSI engine and DSG gearbox. The first – four-cylinder direct-injection, turbocharged 2-liter – delivering 270 horsepower and 350Nm of torque constant between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm, weighs 152 pounds and a setting that receives the boost pressure reaches 1 .2 bar .
The six-speed DSG gearbox allows you to limit consumption and emissions compared with manual transmission – 8.4 l/100 km and 195 g / km for the DSG, 8.5 and 199 for the manual -, including improving the starting acceleration: the 0-100 km / h is in fact covered in 5.5 seconds, scoring an advantage of 2 / 10. Top speed is limited to 250 km / h.
